Status and trends of the industry
As informatization advances rapidly, the financial industry’s requirements for servers become harsher, and normal servers cannot meet many applications’ demand for large computations and super stability. In some other industries, if the data center is not properly established, system applications will become slow and complicated, and a lot of manpower and material resources must be used to operate the system. Besides, such kinds of systems are hard to extend. How to improve system performance and reduce service tie-ups as well as increase the system’s availability and manageability becomes a big problem facing IT development.

The Bank of Luoyang is a state-controlled commercial bank. By the end of 2012, the bank’s total assets reached 78.1 billion yuan, with various deposits of 50.9 billion yuan and loans of 34.7 billion yuan as well as a net profit of 1.32 billion yuan. As a city commercial bank in Henan province, the Bank of Luoyang was rated second-class by the CBRC rather early. At the important period when the bank’s assets almost reached hundreds of billions, it decided to deepen the integration of current business systems and abandon the extensive mode of development so as to fully support the bank’s future development.
As one of the small and medium-sized commercial banks, the Bank of Luoyang’s information construction conditions were different from large banks. Therefore it needed a different construction approach and was more likely to use domestic technologies. Large banks have sufficient funds to purchase imported products and services. Moreover, since the amount of purchases is large, they can compete with international corporations. But small banks have small budgets and fewer purchases, so domestic products with high price/performance are ideal choices.
The Bank of Luoyang has more than 2.1 million individual customers, over 60 thousand corporate customers, and more than 4.7 million savings accounts. The peak of data processing comes when the bank counts interest each month and must handle all accounts as well as update over 4.7 million pieces of data. There are over 40 thousand transactions a day, and within a year there will be 15 million pieces of data. With a 13% increase each year, there will be 24 million pieces of data a year 5 years later. Within 5 years, there will be a total of 100 million pieces of data. The basic data platform should be capable of searching 100 million pieces of data and updating 7.7 million pieces of data. Taking into consideration the bank’s current and future business demand, Inspur designed a practicable solution involving hardware configuration, data warehouse optimization, suggesting that two Inspur Tiansuo K1 Systems as well as several TS850 8-way servers be used.
According to the solution, Inspur will use its Tiansuo K1 System to integrate the bank’s data in various systems, establish a unified data warehouse, and support the collection and minding of data from more than ten business systems including the counter, credit, finance, etc. The data platform includes four layers: the network layer, the application layer, the database and other support software layer, and the hardware layer. The hardware layer consists mainly of Inspur Tiansuo K1 systems and Inspur Tiansuo TS850 8-way servers. Two Tiansuo K1 systems form an HA cluster which is used as the data warehouse server, and each of the two systems operates data marts, data warehouses and the development test environment. The two K1 systems have the same configuration. Each system is configured with 4 computer board, and hardware partitioning technologies are used to divide the 16-way system into 4 systems separating hardware and electrical equipment so as to improve reliability and resource utilization. Several Tiansuo TS850 8-way servers are used as application servers for business intelligence, ETL and network access. When the system is launched, it will be able to support the bank’s business development for three years. In other words, the system is able to search 50 million pieces of data and update 6 million pieces of data in one second.
Advantages of the solution
With the highly available modules of Inspur K-UX OS, the solution ensures the high availability of the two K1 systems, which monitor each other through the network. When the primary system fails, the backup system can take over its applications and ensure business continuity.
The solution adopts the FC-SAN environment to establish the system’s storage environment, the link redundant architecture to avoid the SPOF, and dual-controller 8GB fiber optic storage to significantly improve storage performance.
Inspur Tiansuo K1 System adopts the modular architecture. It is flexible in terms of configuration, which can be done in accordance with the customer’s specific requirements. In this case, configuration is only half completed, but it can be supplemented later according to the Bank of Luoyang’s demand.
FC-SAN is adopted as the storage environment. SAN has excellent scalability and overcomes the limitation on cables that formerly forbids its connection to SCSI, thus significantly expanding the distance between server and storage and increasing possibilities in terms of connection. Better scalability also simplifies the deployment and upgrade of the server and protects investments in old hardware equipment.
