Inspur Facilitates Jinnong (Gold Farmer) Project in Xinjiang

[summary]

Abstract: Jinnong Project is one of the State's Twelve Gold Projects carried out by Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps. In order to promote government businesses, improve civil services, and ameliorate environment, the project recruits Inspur as the technical support institute. This case is even more remarkable considering the Corps’ location in the far northwest and large numbers of regions to manage.

Project Background

Approved by the State Council, Jinnong Project is implemented by the Corps' Bureau of Agriculture in Xinjiang. Under the guidance of the State Council, Xinjiang Jinnong Project requires an integrated system to provide agricultural information and resources, government services, and to achieve centralized management and organization of resources. This project is expected to solve the problems of construction redundancy, resource dispersion and information inadequacy, and to realize the mission of E-government.

As Li Qingguo, the chief manager of Information Section from Agrotechniques Promotion Station points out, the first phase of Jinnong Project focuses on building an agricultural information center. Since the Bureau of Agriculture was not equipped with individual information center, Jinnong Project is going to create one. Up to now, computer rooms and other hardware infrastructure have been completed, and remaining software infrastructure is to be finished soon.

All is ready except the most crucial part. However, building a completely new information center is never easy. The construction process is complicated, and consists of five parts, i.e. the application system, the data center, the database, the system support and maintenance, and the information platform. The first two parts are of special significance in the whole project.

Demand Analysis

The application system has two major functions, the first one is releasing agricultural production and market information regularly on the Bureau’s official website; and the second is connecting the data between the central government and the Corp. To meet the requirements in the eleventh five-year plan of development, two data centers need to be established, one for agricultural information, and the other for grain circulation database. The information load in data centers poses a challenge to the processing and transmitting capacity of the system.

Solutions

Based on the real situation, Inspur develops NF560D2 server, AS1000N network storage system and VTL1000 virtual tape library with other auxiliary products. With work division among application server, data backup server, virtual tape library and disk array, Jinnong Project has completed an efficient, secure, manageable and extensible information system in the first phase.

The application server deals with business logic, connecting requests by users and connecting requests from the database or other application systems. The server is also responsible for settlement of certain businesses. With single processing capacity of over 70000tpmC, Inspur corporate server NF560D2 establishes a multi-machine cluster environment.

Inspur NF560D2 also acts as the database server, which is divided into dynamic partition, multi-machine cluster and parallel databases. This structure allows several host computers to visit the database simultaneously; thus the application can be allocated to different host computers which can work as backup for each other. In this way, Inspur server fulfills different requirements with its system hardware, clustered software in operating system and parallel databases. Meanwhile, within the database serving platform, single servers are used to collect and process data separately before entering the database through a single entry.

Storage system of the data center uses SAN storage technology and is equipped with interchanger, AS100ON disk array, and VTL1OOO virtual tape library. As explained by technician from Inspur, SAN storage technology has the following advantages: First, it features open-ended standard and enables information sharing between servers and the storage devices, which allows users to develop the system in the future without additional cost. Second, the SAN storage technology transmits a gigabit of data per second; so SAN-based storage devices are extensible; as the total redundancy of the hardware infrastructure increases, the usability of storage devices will also be enhanced. So far, there are several solutions based on SAN technology. The most typical way is to increase long-distance disaster tolerance and to backup in zero downtime. Distributed devices, like host computer, storage system, and interchanger, can also be configured with a SAN backup disk, thus increasing manageability and reducing waste in space. With the completion of information system for Jinnong Project, the agriculture data center becomes both the network tandem center and the Internet access center for the Bureau of Agriculture. The platform is now responsible for data storing and interchanging, as well as the official website operating.

Significance of Clients

Li Qingguo, the chief manger appreciated the cooperation with Inspur, "The Corps has two criteria when choosing servers. First, the product must be excellence in quality; second, it must have high performance-cost ratio. So Inspur is the best choice."
